According to the OECD's "Global Plastics Outlook: Policy Scenarios to 2060" report in 2022, global plastic usage is projected to increase from 460 million tons in 2019 to approximately 1.23 billion tons by 2060, nearly tripling over the period. Consequently, greenhouse gas emissions from the plastics sector are expected to increase from 2 billion tons in 2020 to 5.4 billion tons by 2054. In contrast, the plastic recycling rate was only 9% as of 2019. Incineration accounted for 19%, landfilling for 49%, and the remaining 22% was analyzed to be released into the environment as harmful substances like microplastics.

By 2060, it is projected that the recycling rate will increase to 17%, while the proportion of plastic released into the environment will decrease to 15%. However, incineration and landfilling are expected to remain in the 18% and 50% range, respectively. This indicates the necessity not only to increase plastic recycling but also to significantly reduce the development of plastic materials themselves.

Outlook for Plastic Waste Management by Category

In today's society, where the use of eco-friendly materials has become essential, particularly for single-use packaging, the development of eco-friendly materials for packaging cannot be overlooked globally.
Many companies are striving to transition to eco-friendly packaging such as plastic-free packages and pulp molds. However, there are not many companies that possess both material development expertise and the technology to produce packages capable of accommodating various contents with different properties.

In this context, REVATION, an eco-friendly product specialist company, provides a one-stop service from the development of eco-friendly materials to branding, design, and production as a green solution platform to address social and environmental issues.

REVATION focuses on eco-friendly material development, practicing "Less Plastic" by minimizing plastic usage from production.
Established in April 2021, it brings together experts in package design who have worked for a long time in LG Household & Health Care, as well as professionals from R&D, marketing, and design fields in the consumer goods and cosmetics sectors.
The name "REVATION" signifies "Re + Innovation," reflecting its mission of returning to nature through innovation.

REVATION has its own design studio, R&D laboratory, and production factory, enabling it to handle all processes from material development and testing to product application experiments and injection molding production.
This system allows it to offer diverse solutions ranging from consulting on eco-friendly packaging to design, R&D, production, and delivery to clients. Additionally, its ability to produce small quantities of various products through its in-house production facility is another advantage.

In the current era where ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) management of companies is imperative, REVATION collaborates with various companies as a strategic partner. It not only focuses on recycling existing materials (upcycling) but also develops eco-friendly packages from raw materials by excluding plastic from the production process. It develops alternative materials and aims to create packaging with natural colors and textures by using only one material per package, avoiding dyeing or coating that complicates resource circulation.

PAPER MOLD

One of REVATION's most prominent materials is non-wood paper mold (PAPER MOLD), which accounts for 70% of its total production.
It is an eco-friendly material that replaces plastic packaging with 100% paper material.
Made from materials extracted from sugarcane bamboo, it decomposes in the soil within six months, making it a viable alternative to plastic packaging.
Compared to pulp molds, it reduces mold costs by 1/6, resulting in a 60% cost savings. With its characteristics as a new material, it offers high price competitiveness compared to pulp molds, has similar durability to plastic, and provides good cushioning, making it a suitable alternative to polystyrene (PS) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) previously used.

Bio-plastic materials that replace plastics include LIMEX, a new material born from limestone, DURASENCE, a wood-based bio-material, and SULAPAC, a 100% bio-polymer that decomposes naturally.

LIMEX
LIMEX is a new material derived from limestone and plant-based plastics.
It offers carbon reduction effects and reduces petroleum-based resin, contributing to resource circulation through recyclability.
Compared to conventional petroleum-based plastics, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 89%.

DURASENCE
DURASENCE, made from a combination of wood fibers and plastic, has minimal environmental impact in terms of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas reduction effects, and it boasts excellent price competitiveness comparable to traditional plastics.
It minimizes wood waste and utilizes naturally extracted materials, providing a natural appearance characteristic of wood fibers.

SULAPAC
SULAPAC, made from wood chips and plant-based binders, is a completely biodegradable material that returns to nature.
It eliminates microplastics entirely, allowing for differentiation in eco-friendly marketing, and it has received global certification for being a 100% biodegradable polymer material with recognized design value.

In addition, various materials developed by recycling discarded items are also being introduced.
Examples include ECO CHIP, which recycles discarded PEI (polyetherimide) R&D materials, and COFFEE CHIP, which utilizes coffee waste.

ECO CHIP
ECO CHIP, made from recycled PEI R&D materials, utilizes surplus resources rather than discarded waste to produce, thereby significantly reducing plastic usage while ensuring excellent safety.

COFFEE CHIP
Coffee grounds, which generate 20,000 tons of waste worldwide per day, constitute one of the largest waste streams; however, they are a safe material.
Developing coffee grounds, which are 100% bio-based, into various forms suitable for consumption in various industries through injection molding.

REVATION provides comprehensive services to corporate clients, ranging from consulting on eco-friendly products, branding and design, introduction and development, to production, product inspection, and delivery.
Depending on customer needs, we carry out the entire process or individual processes to derive optimized results.
Leveraging our in-house developed production tool, Restudio, we operate design, material R&D, production, delivery, and service to promptly meet customer requests.

This approach not only reduces carbon emissions and costs but also strategically showcases the eco-friendly values that companies pursue. We expand our customer base in various packaging markets, including cosmetics, home appliances, daily necessities, and F&B.
We collaborate with over 100 companies, including large corporations such as LG, SK, Cosmax, Yuhan-Kimberly, and Amorepacific, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises and individual business owners. In particular, we plan to expand our collaboration with Yuhan-Kimberly, aiming to increase the proportion of products using sustainable materials to 95% of total products by 2023.

As the importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) in the international community grows, and ESG compliance acts as a prerequisite for exports, REVATION aims to help domestic companies transform into ESG-compliant enterprises.
Additionally, we aim to play a pivotal role as a partner in eco-friendly product manufacturing for companies, thereby achieving fundamental changes in the packaging industry.
We are also planning to establish a European corporation in the future to pursue global expansion through collaboration with excellent material companies in Europe.
