"Currently, environmental friendliness is the foremost topic for businesses. It is time to exert every effort to reduce waste and carbon emissions from product manufacturing to distribution and disposal processes.
The cessation of plastic and single-use items is no longer just a matter of effort or will, as it is becoming subject to legal sanctions. This is a global phenomenon, and domestically, it is no exception.
Starting from next year, the use of plastic straws and stirrers will be completely prohibited, and from 2023, the use of bags and shopping bags will be banned in all industries, including convenience stores and bakeries.
After 2030, material standardization or the replacement of disposable containers will be mandatory.
In fact, major food brands such as Lotte Confectionery, Haitai Confectionery, and Nongshim have plans to eliminate or replace plastic trays.
The use of non-plastic, eco-friendly packaging has now become an 'essential' requirement for corporate environmental standards."
In a world where eco-friendly materials have become a necessity rather than a choice,
What about from the perspective of designers? Material is an issue that every designer should consider and handle carefully.
Material is not only the starting point of design but also something that can both restrict and expand the scope of design. Moreover, when it comes to eco-friendly issues, designers have responsibilities and obligations, not only to society and corporations but also to themselves. Applying concepts such as recycling or upcycling in the discovery of 'new' materials, and the effort of the CMF team in finding new eco-friendly materials or related companies, all stem from this responsibility.
However, it's not easy for anyone other than large corporations to establish infrastructure for material exploration or research. Especially in terms of eco-friendly materials, there is still a lack of relevant infrastructure and research.
Furthermore, until now, there have been hardly any individual companies in Korea that engage in material development, production, and packaging.
From branding to material development, design, injection molding, and production,
Now, there is no more time to delay. Until now, the focus has mostly been on finding related companies or materials.
In reality, companies specializing in material development have either been under large corporations or existed only as research institutes.
Established last April, REVATION (represented by Lee Min-seong) is a solution company that provides a one-stop service from the development of eco-friendly materials to branding, design, and production. It is a company founded by representatives who have been in charge of package design for LG Household & Health Care for a long time, along with in-house designers from Have & Be (Dr.Jart+) and product R&D and production experts. It has its own design studio, R&D research institute, and production factory.
One advantage that designers or companies may find appealing is that through its own production factory, REVATION can produce small quantities of various products. From material development and testing to product application experiments, injection molding, and mass production, REVATION has established a system where it can propose and carry out all these processes at once.
Is it possible to achieve complete eco-friendliness?
The path to achieving 'complete eco-friendliness' products is still long. Most products include eco-friendly components or elements, but they cannot be considered as entirely eco-friendly materials.
It is difficult to ascertain whether vinyl labels or PET bottles are actually being recycled, or if biodegradable components truly decompose 100%.
It cannot be said that every aspect of a product, including all packaging materials, packages, containers, and ingredients, is 100% eco-friendly.
It is for these reasons that there is a growing demand for materials that can truly be called 'eco-friendly.
The second-generation PAPERMOLD, improved from pulp molds, is produced using REVATION's technology.
It is utilized in various applications such as tableware, electronic devices, and cosmetic packaging.
Some brands of companies like Samsung Electronics, Apple, and certain brands under Amorepacific have been striving to transition to eco-friendly packaging through complete plastic-free packaging and pulp molds.
Recently, Chanel's fragrance packaging has also gained attention.
By applying pulp molds to the packaging of No.5 perfume, they have achieved eco-friendly packaging with a luxurious mood.
Looking back at previous cases of 'eco-friendly' packaging, which were often lacking in terms of design or aesthetic perspective, it is significant that not only materials but also customized designs have been implemented.
As a result, the speed of development in eco-friendly materials and design through them is gradually accelerating.
In particular, REVATION possesses the first domestic technology for printing on pulp molds.
Compared to traditional pulp molds, PAPERMOLD has reduced mold costs to 1/6 and is being introduced to the market with a 60% reduction in product prices.
Moreover, it is capable of printing, enabling small-quantity production of various products.
This news is truly eye-opening as it eliminates the need for carbon reduction, reduces recycling fees, and doesn't require plastic separation.
"REVATION is pioneering innovative design changes with the second-generation PAPERMOLD, an evolution from pulp molds."

Even though REVATION is only 4 months old, it has established partnerships with numerous major corporations and is receiving many proposals from companies and designers interested in REVATION's materials.

Representative Lee Min-seong stated that "reducing plastic usage and reducing carbon emissions through the use of alternative materials to plastic is the ultimate goal of eco-friendly packaging,"
which aligns with the ultimate goal of global environmental policies, "carbon reduction."
Therefore, he emphasized that environmental protection is an important role for companies, along with sustainability and social responsibility.
Partnerships with many manufacturing and production companies, as well as designers, are also crucial at this point.
At this juncture, the representative emphasized the need for more companies like REVATION because environmental improvement cannot be achieved by the efforts of just one or two companies.
Efforts from companies, designers, manufacturers, production companies, and consumers are all necessary, and REVATION's expertise could be the optimal choice for eco-friendly packaging solutions.
